During the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s the Shelton Gang was one of the most powerful gangs in the mid-west. Starting with prohibition in 1920 and continuing with gambling after the end of prohibition in 1933, the Shelton’s controlled these illegal operations in Southern Illinois. In the 1940’s the Shelton’s operated out of Peoria and controlled all the slot machines in Peoria and Peoria County as well as running a gambling hall across the street from City Hall and providing protection for the other gambling interests in Peoria. In this presentation you will meet the Shelton brothers, hear about the gang wars in Southern Illinois, see how they operated in Peoria and about the demise of the gang.
